The name Blacksmith Digital has an interesting story tied to our founding partner’s family history and roots. Michael Bogosian was born into a family of miners, prospectors, pioneers, and artisans.
His father, Michael Bogosian Sr. immigrated to America as an Armenian looking for freedom from racial and religious persecution in Turkey at the age of 16. He got his start cleaning toilettes for Hannah-Barbara, the famous animation studio that gave us our beloved cartoons like The Flintstones, The Yogi Bear Show, The Jetsons, and Scooby-Doo. Michael’s father apprenticed in Istanbul Turkey’s Grand Bazaar as a jeweler at the age of 12, he quickly became a master of his craft. In the US he became known as the go-to guy for all things in jewelry. He started Matthews Jewelry store in 1972, and in 1994 started his own design collection Michael B. Jewelry. Michael’s father was hailed as a maverick and one of the most original creative thinkers of his generation in the jewelry industry before he passed away in 2014.
Michael’s mother Aida comes from a family of diamond miners, prospectors, and pioneers. Michael’s grandfather, Aida’s father, famously crossed the Mediterranean Ocean from Lebanon in the 1960s and became one of the first people to prospect for diamonds in the rivers of Libera in North Africa. He traded with local villagers who took the valuable stones for nothing more than shiny rocks and brought them home to Beirut, Lebanon to be fashioned into the beautiful diamonds.
With the spirit of Michael’s rich family history, traditions, and experience Blacksmith Digital was formed. Our focused team is made of pioneering thinkers and digital craftsmen.
